A Recent Study Found Dogs and People Share the Same Mortality Signature. It Took 2.6 Years of Follow-Up Instead of 28.
Researchers measured 133 molecules in the blood of 937 Dog Aging Project dogs and compared the results against nine human studies. The molecules that predict earlier death in people predict it in dogs too — which is a real finding, and also not a test you can go buy.
There's a version of the dog-aging story that shows up every few months and is almost always overstated: a pill, a supplement, a blood test that will tell you how old your dog "really" is.
A study published recently in The Journals of Gerontology is a quieter and more interesting thing. It didn't find a treatment. It found that the biology is the same. [1][2]
What they did
Researchers working with the Dog Aging Project measured the plasma metabolome — the small molecules floating in blood as a byproduct of everything the body is doing — in 937 dogs from the project's Precision cohort. They looked at 133 metabolites, measured by targeted mass spectrometry, and adjusted for age, sex, weight, and how closely related the breeds were. [3]
Then they asked which of those molecules were associated with dying sooner, and compared the answer against nine large human cohort studies that had run the same kind of analysis. [3]
What they found
The two lists lined up. There was a strong positive correlation between how a given metabolite predicted all-cause mortality in humans and how the same metabolite predicted it in dogs — and for the molecules most strongly tied to mortality, the agreement was close to exact. [3]
Some of the named ones: pseudouridine, N2,N2-dimethylguanosine, and homocitrulline tracked with higher mortality risk in both species. Deoxycarnitine and homoarginine tracked with lower risk. [3]
Dr. Kate Creevy, the Dog Aging Project's chief veterinary officer and a professor at Texas A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine, put it this way: "The molecules that are risky for dogs or protective against a sooner death are very similar to those in people." [1]
The number worth noting is in the follow-up time. The dog result came out of 2.6 years of observation. Getting the equivalent signal in the human studies took between 8 and 28 years. [3] Dogs live shorter lives in the same houses, breathing the same air, on similar couches — which is exactly what makes them useful for this kind of question, and why the researchers describe them as a translational model rather than a curiosity.
What this doesn't mean
It isn't a test. There's no clinical assay you can ask your vet for that reads your dog's metabolome and returns a number, and the "biological age" kits marketed to dog owners are not this study.
It also isn't causal. These are molecules that travel with a shorter life, not ones shown to cause it. Pseudouridine goes up with a lot of things — kidney function among them — and a correlation across a cohort doesn't tell you what to do about any individual dog.
And the cohort is what it is: dogs whose owners volunteered them for a long-term research project, which is not a random sample of American dogs. [3]
What it does mean
Mostly this: the aging advice that has evidence behind it in people is likely to be the same advice that matters for dogs, for the same underlying reasons. That's a more useful conclusion than it sounds, because it means the boring levers are probably the real ones.
Creevy's own list, asked what owners should take from it, was short — a healthy diet, a healthy body weight, and preserving mobility and cognitive health. [1][2]
Which translates to a handful of things you can actually do:
- Body condition over the scale number. You want to feel ribs easily under a thin layer, and see a waist from above. Measured meals rather than free feeding.
- Keep them moving, and adapt rather than stop. Loss of mobility in an older dog tends to compound — less walking, more weight, more joint pain, less walking. Shorter and more frequent beats one long weekend hike.
- Treat pain as a longevity issue. September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, and untreated arthritis is one of the most common reasons an older dog stops moving.
- Watch the mind as well as the body. Disorientation, changed sleep, new nighttime pacing, or forgetting familiar routines are worth raising early — what cognitive decline actually looks like in an older dog is not the same as "slowing down."
- Be skeptical of the shortcut. The longevity-supplement market for dogs is well ahead of its evidence, and this study doesn't change that.
There's no intervention in any of this. What's here is a decent argument that the thing we know how to do — keep them lean, keep them moving, keep them comfortable — is operating on the same machinery in a dog that it does in us.
